Into the Trenches

This post was written by students Avi and Jack.

Today was a fun-filled, yet physically exhausting experience. We woke up bright and early to cheesy empanadas, which we thoroughly enjoyed. Then we got started on our community service for the day. I, Jack, did not have my morning coffee so I was very out of it. Luckily, our two great leaders came to the rescue and brought me back to life at lunch time. By the afternoon, I was a digging machine. The morning consisted of digging a water trench and playing with the kids at the local day care. Despite a little rain, the group was in high spirits by lunch and we indulged in fried eggs, potatoes, rice, salad, and chicken soup.

After lunch, it was back to work on the trench. I, Jack, was in high gear turning the hard dirt into dust. After Jack loosened the hard soil, I, Avi, shoveled it out of the trench. Following these last two hours of works, I, Avi, also had the chance to learn some songs on the guitar from Segundo, our Ecuadorian friend, our role model, our love. Fun fact: Segundo is the Ryan Seacrest of Ecuadorian Idol. Dinner was a hearty meal of rice, potatoes, salad, and popcorn. It was a perfect way to finish off a work-filled, yet very fun day!
